Seal rings
The seals are parts of rubber and plastic or metal, which provide the seal between a
rotating and stationary part. Think, for example, of the pulleys of the crankshaft and camshaft . The pulleys in this case are the rotating gears. These
gears are lubricated with oil. In order to maintain good lubrication of the
parts, the correct sealing must be ensured. Moreover, oil will quickly attract
dirt and moisture, which we do not want to find in the lubricant. When dirt and
moisture get into the oil, this can cause the parts to wear faster. Therefore,
a sealing ring is placed in the rotating parts. The seal ensures that the oil
does not leak out of the parts and also keeps moisture and dirt away from the
rotating parts.
Types of seals At Winparts you will find different
types of seals for different applications. You will find seals for the
camshaft, crankshaft, differential and gearbox. Below we will explain the different
types in more detail.
The camshaft seal ensures that the oil between the camshaft and the cylinder head cannot leak out. The camshaft protrudes from both sides of the cylinder head,
which is why the car is equipped with a front and rear camshaft ring.
The crankshaft seal is the sealing part between the rotating crankshaft and the
engine block. Two variants of this can also be found in the car. The crankshaft
protrudes on both sides of the engine block and thus also has a front and rear
crankshaft seal.
The differential seal is the seal of the differential. The differential is a
gearbox which is placed between the driving wheels of the car. This ensures
that the inner wheel makes a shorter turn when steering than the outer wheel.
The differential seal is the seal in the gearbox or, in other words, the
differential.
Transmission oil is stored in the gearbox, through which the lower gears of the gearbox drive.
The splash action lubricates the other parts. The gearbox seal ensures that the
oil cannot escape or leak from the gearbox and that moisture and dirt is kept
out.
Replace seal ring A leaking seal ring should be
replaced as soon as possible. When a seal leaks, it can cause a lot of damage
to other car parts. Take the camshaft seal for example. If the camshaft seal
has leaked, this oil can leak onto the timing belt . When the timing brake gets
greasy, it can break. This can result in serious engine damage. In addition, it
is not wise to drive around with a car that leaks oil. This seriously pollutes
the environment. Also a leaking crankshaft seal and differential seal will leave
oil stains under the car. Therefore, make sure that a leaking or broken seal is
replaced as soon as possible.
